England want to create history, says Rooney

Wayne Rooney is confident England can etch their names into the history books when the FIFA World Cup gets underway next month.

Not much is expected of England in Brazil, especially after Roy Hodgson named the second-youngest squad in the nation s history on Monday.

But speaking to the Mirror, Rooney backed his team-mates to advance ahead of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D and add to their maiden World Cup triumph, which was back in 1966.

We can all be heroes, Rooney said. It s our chance to make history for our country and you don t get many opportunities.

You see all the programmes on TV, looking back at the history of the World Cup and that s what we want to do.

We want to create our own bit of history so in years to come, people will look back …

Chelsea cleared of €32m Salah bill

Chelsea have been cleared of having to pay Fiorentina up to €32million over the Serie A club s anger at being unable to sign Mohamed Salah in 2015.

Fiorentina had taken their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), who have ruled in the Premier League champions favour.

Salah was loaned to La Viola by Chelsea in February 2015, with a view to an additional year, however he never returned to Fiorentina, despite their attempts to extend the deal.

The Egypt star instead joined Roma, where he shone in Serie A before joining Liverpool in an estimated £40million deal this month.

Fiorentina had claimed that Salah refusing to report for pre-season training ahead of 2015-16 was in breach of contract and had sought damages from Chelsea.

Jardim extends contract with Monaco

Monaco have announced that head coach Leonardo Jardim has signed a new three-year contract.

The 42-year-old, who guided his side to a Ligue 1 title triumph and the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2016-17, has agreed a deal that will run until 2020.

The confidence the club has shown in me has always been essential to me, he told Monaco s official website.

I feel part of AS Monaco and of the principality. I m therefore very happy to continue my work at AS Monaco.

The last three seasons have been exceptional, crowned by the title of champions of France in May. We will therefore work with the same ambition to continue this project and continue to grow this club with the same passion that has inspired us from the beginning.

Lyon haven´t received offers for Aouar or Depay – Juninho

Lyon sporting director Juninho insisted there have been no offers for Houssem Aouar or Barcelona target Memphis Depay.

Aouar and Depay are in demand following their exploits for Ligue 1 club Lyon, who reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019-20.

Aouar has been linked with the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Chelsea, while Depay is reportedly wanted by LaLiga giants Barca.

Juninho was asked about the star duo following Lyon s 2-1 loss at Montpellier on Tuesday.

Mbappe tells PSG not to feel fear after Man Utd win

Kylian Mbappe said Paris Saint-Germain must not feel fear after a 2-0 win at Manchester United established a dominant position in their Champions League last-16 tie.

Mbappe doubled PSG s lead after Presnel Kimpembe gave the Ligue 1 champions the advantage at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with former United winger Angel Di Maria creating both goals.

United s first defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also their heaviest ever home loss in European competition, while Paul Pogba s late red card added to their problems ahead of next month s return leg in Paris.

PSG lost 5-2 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the last 16 a year ago and in 2016-17 they were on the end of one of football s greatest ever comebacks, Barcelona overturning a 4-0 first-leg deficit to progress.
